Knowledge of material taught in the course: Introduction to Divine Worship (106Y) is necessary.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course a successful student can:
-outline the most characteristic ritual acts of the celebration of the Mysteries as they are celebrated in the Orthodox Church.
-connect the elements of historical evolution concerning the ritual acts'
-understand the meaning of the ritual acts.

Course Content (Syllabus)
In this course we study the historical development and current ritual celebration of the sacramental Mysteries of the Orthodox Church. At the same time we refer to the meaning of the ritual acts so that we understand completely the actions.
1. Introduction to the course. Prebaptismal acts and prayers.
2. Time and days for the celebration of Baptism. Baptismal preparation and the origins of Lent.
3. Baptism – historical and teleturgical examination I.
4. Baptism – historical and teleturgical examination II.
5. Betrothal and Matrimony.
6. Unction – historical and teleturgical examination.
7. The communion of the sick (preparation – preservation – offering of Holy Communion).
8. Funerary Rites.
9. Blessing of the Waters (small and great).
10. Ordination (deacon - presbyter - bishop).
11. Church consecration.
12. The sacramental life of the Church and mass media.
13. General discussion. Review.

Oral examination given during the exam period with questions derived from the material covered throughout the semester (80%). Writing an essay (20%).
