Learning Outcomes
By the end of the semester, students will be expected to: - recognize and describe the historical development of the feasts referring to Virgin Mary - recognize, analyze and describe and compare between the various kinds of the texts in prose and verse that relate to the feasts of the Theotokos - analyze and describe the development of the iconographic depiction of the feasts of the Theotokos

Course Content (Syllabus)
The historical framework of the birth, establishment and development of the feasts of the Theotokos will be presented, and the historical-grammatological and theological texts that relate to the feasts of the Theotokos will be analysed. Moreover, representations of the life of the Theotokos will be presented through iconography. 1. The Theotokos in the Worship of the Church. 2. Sources of the Life of the Theotokos – Apocrypha for the Theotokos– «Lives» of the Theotokos. 3. Feast of the Conception of the Theotokos: History – Literature – Theology. 4. Feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos: History – Literature – Theology. 5. Feast of the Presentation of the Theotokos: History – Literature – Theology. 6. Feast of the Evangelism of the Theotokos: History – Literature – Theology. 7. Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos: History – Literature – Theology. 8. Feasts of the “relics” of the Theotokos (holy cincture, holy robe, holy maphorion). 9. Historical-grammatological and Theological Analysis of Encomiastic Speeches and Hymns for the Theotokos. 10. The Early Life of the Theotokos in the Byzantine Art. 11. The Later Life of the Theotokos in the Byzantine Art. 12. Depictions of the Theotokos in the Byzantine Art. 13. Relationship between the circles of the Theotokos and Christ in the iconography of churches.
