Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course students will:
1. have been aware of the phenomenon of pilgrimage through texts and monuments,
2. have understood the categories and terms of pilgrimage and travels
3. be able to assess modern pilgrimage mobility and travel activity centered on the monument, archaeological site and museum, within the limits of: (a) the pilgrimage of migrants, (b) their desire for a cultural approach and ) their recreational will.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Pilgrimage and travel are activities of the Christian life with extensive presence throughout the Byzantine, post-Byzantine and modern times. During the course the different qualitative characteristics of the two actions are presented, although they are both manifestations of Christian culture. So, the textual testimonies of the travels and visits to places of Christianity over the centuries are sought and the evidence provided is evaluated.The routes, conditions and results of these travels and pilgrims’ visits are presented. The lesson then turns to the monuments that are the destinations of travelers and pilgrims. Finally, the reasons for selecting specific destinations are presented as well as the way monuments are handled by visitors (recruitment). It is also suggested the correct ecclesiastical approach and demarcation of monuments.
