Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to:
1. Make an interdisciplinary approach and analyse the culture of the Western Middle Ages and the Italian Renaissance.
2. Describe the characteristics of Renaissance and Baroque art as well as the work of the major artists of this period.
3. Interpret the cultural impact of the Byzantine Christian culture on the Western civilisation.
4. Analyse the interaction between Byzantine and Post-Byzantine art and the Western art of Renaissance.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course presents a brief diagram of the Western Religious Art from the 11th to the 17th centuries. with great emphasis on the Italian Renaissance and the Baroque. The course introduces the main stages in the evolution of Christian Art in the West over the centuries and analyses key aspects of the Italian Humanism and Renaissance. In addition, the work of the most important artists of the Renaissance, Mannerism and Baroque in architecture, sculpture and painting is examined.
COURSE SYLLABUS
1. Overview of Medieval History and Christian Art in the West - The cultural and artistic interaction between the Byzantine East and Western Europe.
2. The Art of the Middle Ages in the West: Romantic and Gothic Rhythm (11th-12th c.)
3. Italian Humanism and Renaissance at the Crossroads of European Culture: Historical and Economic Conditions - Society, Artists and the Renewal of the Arts - Renaissance and Antiquity - The Renaissance Art Theory.
4. The Renaissance Architecture: from Brunelleschi and Alberti to Bramante and Palladio.
5. The Renaissance Sculpture: from Ghiberti and Donatello to Verrocchio and Michelangelo.
6. Painting of the Early Italian Renaissance: International Gothic Style - The influence of Byzantine art (maniera greca - maniera latina).
7. The workshops of Florence, Siena and Venice during the Early Renaissance.
8. The leading painters of the Renaissance and their work: Leonardo da Vinci - Raffaello - Michelangelo.
9. The Art of Mannerism - The Case of El Greco.
10. Baroque architecture and sculpture.
11. The painting of Baroque.
12. Relations and Interactions between Post-Byzantine Art and the Art of Renaissance, Mannerism and Baroque.
13. Course overview - Presentation of assignments.
