General Prerequisites
There aren’t any prerequisites in order to be eligible for registration for this course. Any student following the IA semester can attend this course. The maximum number of students attending this course are 60 since it consists of many practical sessions, which are held in small groups of maximum 7 students.
Learning Outcomes
LEARNING RESULTS Prehospital management of potentially lethal emergencies is the first step in the treatment chain of the severely ill patient and in many cases it determines the outcome. It is not uncommon for the young physician to be confronted with such cases alone far away from any organized sanitation facility. The object of this course is to provide to the students knowledge, skills and proper drug use guidelines for the management of potentially lethal emergencies.

LEARNING SUBJECTS Knowledge and Skills in Prehospital Emergency Medicine Clinical assessment of the critically ill patient Organization and Functions of the National Center for Emergency Care (“ΕΚΑΒ”) The role of the professional rescuer (paramedic) in the Prehospital Emergency Medicine System Causes and Prevention of Cardiac Arrest Advanced Life Support Algorithm Cardiac Rhythm Disorders Equipment in Prehospital Emergency Medicine Drugs used in Prehospital Emergency Medicine Respiratory Failure – (Severe) Asthma Attack Pain Management Status Epilepticus Fluid Management in the prehospital setting Acute Pulmonary Edema Hypertensive Crisis Emergencies under extreme temperature changes Emergencies under extreme barometric pressure changes Prehospital management/care of the drug addict Obstetrics emergencies Metabolic Emergencies Coma of unknown origin Prehospital Management of the trauma patient Prehospital management of patient in shock Cerebrovascular Stroke The agitated patient – Sedation Prehospital mechanical ventilation principles Ethical Dilemmas in the Prehospital Emergency Medicine Allergic Reaction Drowning Electrical and Lightning Accident Laryngitis –Croup HANDS-ON SKILL STATIONS Basic Airway Management Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation with the use of Automated External Defibrillator Advanced Life Support Pneumothorax Treatment – Cricothyreotomy Management of the trauma patient Clinical Simulation Scenarios / Case Presentation CLINICAL TRAINING Optional attendance in the operating theatre to achieve implementation of knowledge and clinical skills concerning the airway (ventilation with mask, placing an oropharyngeal airway device) and other skills training (insertion of a venous catheter, insertion of urinary catheter).
