Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to approach the textual Christian tradition from the first century to the 20th century, to analyze and interpret the content in direct relation to the historical context in which they were born and finally to understand the timelessness meaning of the fundamental issues of the Orthodox Patristic Tradition.
Course Content (Syllabus)
This course is divided into two units. Firstly, lives and teaching of Church Fathers is studied and secondly, there is an historical-philological analysis of their works.Each writer of church Father is located on a place, time and spiritual environment. This course will figure out the way he interacts in relation with certain social, political, theological and ecclesiastical facts.On the second unit, there is a discussion about the problem of interpretation on church literature. The methods of interpretation, chosen by Fathers, will be presented and there will be a discussion about their impact on contemporary spiritual matters. The approach will become according to patristic texts, analyzed during this course.
