Course Content (Syllabus)
This module focuses on the European art of the Renaissance (14th-16th c.), Baroque (17th c.) and Rococo (first half 18th c.), aiming to the analysis of the basic characteristics of these periods through the presentation of works of painting, sculpture and architecture, indicating their structural links with the social processes and changes that also define their differences in relation to time and place. The module aims to analyse the art of Early Modernity and to define its basic characteristics which set the basis for the perception of the artist and the artwork as it has been shaped in the western canon. This perception is conceived in relation to the new approaches and structures of artistic education, the empowerment of the artist, his relation to the market and the newly founded capitalist structures, etc. In particular, this module addresses issues such as: * the relationship between visual arts and the developments in sciences, technology and culture * the concept of humanism * the gradual detachment of the artist from the guilds and the role of patronage * the new ways for defining the subject of the artist in relation to his upgraded social position * the relationship between art and the systems of power (political, religious, etc.) * the foundation of the institution of Academy * art and the new urban environments
