Economics of Discrimination Learning Outcomes Βy the end of this course, students should be able to: 1. Report historical and current trends by gender and race regarding pay, occupational patterns, labor force participation, and unemployment rates. 2. Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of alternative economic explanations for gender and racial disparities in the labor market. 3. Assess the reliability of different types of empirical evidence. 4. Synthesize and weigh the evidence as a whole. 5. Analyze alternative public policies in light of the evidence.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Economics of discrimination is a special field of analysis in Economics dealing with discrimination and inequality from an economist’s perspective. The focus is on gender discrimination in the labour market. The goal of the course is to make the students aware of the importance of this phenomenon by providing the empirical evidence of gender inequality and the theoretical explanation of the gender disparities in the labour market. Key topics to be covered: The concept of discrimination. Sources and consequences of discrimination. Different forms of discrimination. Overview of the most influential theories of discrimination with their contributions and limitations concerning the explanation of gender discrimination. Measurement of discrimination Empirical evidence of discrimination: empirical studies show that there is a significant gender gap in wages and employment. Fighting discrimination: anti-discrimination law and equality policies.
