Course Content (Syllabus)
Philosophy has, since its founding moment, theorized its ambivalent relationship with art, constructing aesthetic theories, interpreting and evaluating art in the light of its real or ideal role in society, politics or education. In this course we will examine the field of the particular relationship of aesthetics with politics in two main directions: (a) the common problems and conditions of aesthetics and politics as branches of value theories, and (b) the presence and the elaboration of political issues in aesthetics and art. The relevant questions that have been raised and attempted to be answered are many: is there an objectivity in the two fields (and if, in what sense), are there are and how are founded aesthetic and political truths, what is the relationship of aesthetic values with politics and the possibility their autonomy, which are the political aspects of artistic activity and aesthetic life (in the creation, distribution, critique and consumption of works of art), whether is justifiable art propaganda and censorship, ii it possible an aesthetically acceptable or even avant-garde but politically extreme? From the history of philosophy and aesthetics, we will insist on moments that embellish the politicization of the aesthetic or the aesthetization of the political, such as the Platonic critique of art, the iconoclastic conflicts of the Middle Ages and the modernity (French, Russian, Chinese revolutions), central issues of Marxist aesthetics, the radical approaches that originate from the Frankfurt School tradition (W. Benjamin, T. Adorno, J. Rancière, T. Eagleton) and the question of the perception of art as a public good in the context of liberalism (J. Rawls, R. Dworkin).
