Upon successful completion of the course, the student will have •a basic knowledge and understanding of French History and Civilization( from the French Revolution to the 20th century) in the broadest European context in the light of globalization •the capacity to understand historical,literary, political and economic terms, in order to develop vocabulary, to improve and deepen all writing and oral skills in French. •the capacity to develop critical thought by using this knowledge and update it, in order to evaluate the overall course of European culture at the same time and its evolution in the historical process.

Course Content (Syllabus)
History and culture of France II. The course studies the history and culture of France from the French Revolution to the 20th century. The purpose of this course is to approach both the historical and socio-political context, and all the intellectual achievements, artistic expressions and techno-economic achievements of the French society. The following units are covered in this module : 1. Introduction to the 18th century 2. The socio-economic and political context before the French Revolution 3. A chronicle of the French Revolution 4. Political Clubs, the Great Terror, the Directory 5. The cultural and religious, scientific and philosophical, intellectual and literary context: the century of enlightenment 6. The 18th century: the century of philosophers, the Encyclopedia, political literature 7. The main themes developed in 18th century literature 8. Literary genres and the prevalence of the novel in 18th century literature 9. Introduction to the 19th century10. From the Republic to the Napoleonic Empire (1799-1815) 10 . The Civil Code and Napoleonic society 12. The Sixth (19th), century of the Revolutions and the absolute triumph of the bourgeoisie 13. The Third Republic: (1875 -1940)
