Course Content (Syllabus)
202. History and Texts of the Church of Greece The course examines the history and texts of the Church of Greece. We study the formation of the “autocephalon” of the Church of Greece, as a consequence of the ideology of the Enlightenment and the principle of the nationalities that lead to the breakdown of pre-existing unity of the Orthodox Genus, the “Romiosyni”, the “Rum millet”, who had as center and benchmark the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the “Ethnarchousa” Church of Constantinople. The ethnocratic formation creates in Greece the first Orthodox autocephalous Church of the Balkans. We approach the ideological preconditions of 1833’s decision, of the emission of the Patriarchal and Synodal Volume of 1850, but also the continuity of “politeiokratia” during the whole 19th century in the Church of Greece, in comparison and reference with the jurisdictions of the Ethnarchy in the Ecumenical Patriarchate, especially during the period of the reforms – the “Tanzimat” and the General Regulations (“Genikoi Kanonismoi”) in the 19th century. Alongside we present and study ecclesiastical texts of that era. Book used : Metr. Andreas Nanakis, The Ecumenical Patriarchate to the late Ottoman Empire; from Gender and Ethnarchy to the nation, ed. Barbounakis, Thessaloniki 2013 (Metropolitan. Andreas Nanakis)
