After the course students will be able to:
a) gain in-depth knowledge of hymnographic sources
b) analyze modern bibliographic material.
c) distinguish the paths that lead from preaching to rhythmic poetry that is lyrical and dramatic
d) name the principles of Orthodox theology within poetic discourse.
Course Content (Syllabus)
The course is based on the poetic tradition of the Orthodox Church with a focus on the poetic genre of kontakion. Thus, emphasis is given mainly to examples from the theology of the Romanos Melodos (6th century). The aim is to show how poetic speech is tied to the formulation of dogmatic reflections.
