Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the lectures students will be able to:
- record various aspects of the work of Saints Cyril and Methodius and the influence it had on the formation of the identity of the Slavic peoples until today
- realize the importance of their memory for the Slavic world
- compose a complete picture of the phenomenon of hegemonic holiness in the Orthodox Slavic world, which is a special aspect of the hagiological tradition of the Orthodox Church - starting from the model of Constantine and reaching the cases of the holy rulers of medieval Bulgaria, Russia and , who sealed the tradition and spiritual identity of every Orthodox Slavic people.
Course Content (Syllabus)
This course presents analytically the life and the activity of S.S. Cyril and Methodious. Emphasis is given to the particular characteristics of their lives and work, which are reflected on the work of their students and the identity and heritage of the Slavic world and especially the Orthodox Slavic world.
Then we are going to analyze the characteristics of the Cyrillomethodian heritage of the Slavic world and we will shows its impact on the formation of the Slavic identity and especially o the Orthodox Slavic identity until today.
Also, the course presents the history and evolution of hegemonic holiness in the of Orthodox Slavic world during the Middle Ages, when their holy tradition was shaped. The presentation of the hegemonic holiness in the Orthodox Slavic world begins with the archetypical form of Saint Constantine as the Slavic world hired after its Christianization. Also, the special models of the holy rulers of the medieval Bulgaria, Russia and Serbia who are presented, as soon as their special typological characteristics, their relationship with the Saint Constantine's archetype and the tradition of hegemonic holiness they established in their peoples.
