Students are introduced to the Arabic alphabet and basic syntax and grammatical structures of Modern Standard Arabic, i.e. the language used in newspapers, news reports, academic lectures and literature. In the Arab countries there is the sociolinguistic phenomenon of diglossia, the Arabs learn Modern standard Arabic at school and continue to use them as their only written language and orally at formal events; parallelly they use colloquial, al-'amiyya, i.e. the common language of the country where were born that remains strictly oral. Students need to be aware of the fact that they learn a language that is not the mother tongue of any living man, and that tts oral use is maintained only for certain areas of everyday life of life. It is, however, the official language all over the Arab world, and although the style and vocabulary differ from classical language, morphology and syntactic have remained the same. It is important that the Arabs do not differentiate between
Modern Standard Arabic and Classical Arabic, calling them both al-fuṣḥā / the purest language, while referring to the spoken languages as lahjāt / dialects. Therefore, with the study of Modern Standard Arabic the students get the appropriate background to study Arabic as language of Islam in its diachronic form, as they are immersed in all different forms by the first day and through the first three years of their studies, attending in parallel with their Arabic language classes, courses on Islamic History and Theology, Muslim Tradition and the Quran and its Interpretations, where Arabic is an important element of teaching
