Prerequisites
General Prerequisites
The lectures and the thematic presentation of the course generally presuppose the material covered in the classes offered in Liturgics I and II. Passing those courses successfully is considered an advantage
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the semester the successful students will be able to name the three byzantine liturgies and specifically indicate when each is celebrated throughout the liturgical year, according to the current rubrics of the Typicon. They will be in a position to analyze and compare the classical byzantine commentaries on the Divine Liturgy. They will also be able to express and develop theological arguments pertaining to the authenticity of the Divine Liturgy of John Chrysostom and other contemporary issues, such as the active participation of the faithful in the Divine Liturgy, the audible recitation of the Eucharistic prayers as well as the multiple celebration and translation of the Divine Liturgy.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Survey of the origins, evolution, parallels, structure, theology, and ritual celebration of the three Byzantine Liturgies (Basil, Chrysostom, Presanctified). Protheis – Great Entrance – Anaphora – Communion. Examination of issues pertaining to the authorship, concelebration, the way the Anaphora is recited, etc.
SYLLABUS
1. Introduction to the course. Origins of the Eucharistic practice of the Church.
2. Narratives on the Last Supper and the Eucharist in the New Testament
3. Ancient testimonies on the celebration of the Eucharist. The Byzantine Liturgical Commentaries.
4. The Liturgy(-ies) of Basil the Great. Authorship; the time and days it is celebrated.
5. The Liturgy of John Chrysostom. Authorship; Origins, Evolution, Structure, Manuscript Tradition.
6. The Prothesis Rite.
7. The “Pro-Anaphora” and the Great Entrance.
8. The Anaphora. The consecration of the precious Gifts.
9. Communion.
10. The Presanctified. Authorship; Origins, Character, Time and days it is celebrated.
11. Structure of the Presanctified; Overview of its ritual celebration.
12. Issues in Teleturgics. The time of the celebration of the Divine Liturgy, concelebrating, on the audible recitation of the Anaphora.
13. Eucharistic controversies over the centuries.

Student Assessment
Description
A two hour written examination given during the exam period with questions derived from the material covered throughout the semester. Consistent classroom attendance and active participation in discussions and in the weekly liturgical Liturgy-Homiletics practicum (Thursday, 8:00-11:00 at the School Chapel) will have a positive bearing on overall assessment.
