Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course a successful student can:
-outline the most characteristic ritual acts of the celebration of the fixed feasts of the Lord as they are celebrated in the Orthodox Church.
-connect the elements of historical evolution concerning the ritual acts.
-understand the liturgical theology of the fixed feasts of the Lord.

Course Content (Syllabus)
In this course we study the liturgical theology and current ritual celebration of the fixed feasts of the Lord in the Orthodox Church. At the same time we refer to the meaning of the ritual acts so that we understand completely the actions.
1. The calendars and the configuration of the liturgical year.
2. The "catholic" fasts and their configuration.
3. The feast of Indictus as a feast of the Lord and its ritual elements.
4. Theology, feasts and hagiographic readings of the Holy Cross.
5. The ritual acts of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross and the Holy Cross Sunday. Their theological meaning.
6.The ritual celebration of the Holy Cross exit and the appeared sign of the Holy Cross.
7. The Nativity of Christ and its pre-feast and after feast period. The hagiographic readings.
8. The "Royal Hours" of Christmas. The small and the Great Compline.
9. The Circumcision of Christ and the first of the year. Their theological interrelation and the ritual orders.
10. The Baptism of our Lord and its pre-feast and after feast period. The hagiographic readings.
11. The "Royal Hours" of Theophany. The Great Blessing of the Waters Th small and the Great Compline.
12. The Presentation of Christ in the Temple and its pre-feast and after feast period. The interrelation of the feast with the service "εις το εκκλησιάσαι παιδίον".
13. The Transfiguration of Christ and its pre-feast and after feast period. The experience of the feast in the liturgical life of the Church..

Oral examination given during the exam period with questions derived from the material covered throughout the semester (80%). Writing an essay (20%).
