- be able to analyze and describe the formation and development of the genre of the Byzantine monastic Hagiography

Course Content (Syllabus)
Selected monastic Vitae (Biographies) are presented and examined in terms of history, grammatology and theology, and specific reference is made to individual personalities of the monastic and hermitic life in Byzantium.
1. General Introduction to Byzantine Monasticism.
2. The Hagiographical Biography in Byzantium.
3. Early Byzantine Monastic Hagiography: The Life of Saint Antony and its significance for the formation and development of the Byzantine monastic biography.
4. The Life of Saint Pachomios.
5. The Byzantine Ascetic-Hagiographical Collections Ι: Sayings of the Fathers – Gerontika – Palladios of Helenopolis, The Lausiac History.
6. The Byzantine Ascetic-Hagiographical Collections ΙΙ: Theodoret of Cyrrhus, Religious History – John Moschus, Spiritual Meadow, Paul Evergetinos, Synagoge.
7. Monasticism and Sainthood in the Hagiographical Text of Cyril of Scythopolis: Lives of Saints Euphemius the Great and Sabbas the Sanctified.
8. Stylites – Dendrites (Tree dwellers).
9. Women Monastics in Male Monasteries: Lives of Saints Eugenia, Pelagia, Euphrosyne.
10. Iconoclasm and Monastic Hagiography: Lives of Saints Stephen the Younger, Plato of Sakkoudion, Theodore the Stoudite.
11. Early Athonite Monastic Hagiography: Lives of Saints Peter and Athanasius the Athonites.
12. The Monastic Biography During 11th and 12th Centuries: Lives of Saints Symeon the New Theologian, Nikon the “Metanoeite”, Lazaros of Galesion, Meletios the Younger.
