Learning Outcomes
Before the completion of this course each student should be able to: 1. understand and display knowledge on the fundamentals of the physics of sound and waves, as well as the physics of musical instruments 2. Apply knowledge about these concepts into practical domains, and in solving problems, 3. Develop knowledge about related contemporary research methodology 4. Understand the value of interdisciplinary approaches in the study of music.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The viewpoint of Musical Acoustics to music theory and practice is based on fundamental theory and methodology of classical Acoustics and its related disciplines, which focus on topics such as: production and propagation of sound waves, processing of sound signals, and finally, perception of sound by humans and other species. Topical outline of the course: 1. Fields of Acoustics and related disciplines. 2. Elements of waves and acoustics 3. Analysis and graphical representation of audio signals. 4. Introduction to the physics of musical instruments 5. The algebra of musical intervals and scales.

Instruction is largely based on IC technologies. There are several types of software which is used most of the time during the semester, such as: 1. Electronic presentation software (e.g. MS PowerPoint) 2. Software for simulating and visualizing wave phenomena (e.g. propagation of sound, vibrations of strings and ducts etc.). 3. Software for sound editing and analysis (e.g. Adobe Audition). 4. Software for conducting virtual labs.

Student Assessment
There are two preliminary written examinations during the semester which provide access to the final exam at the end of the semester. In these exams students are required to respond to brief questions on fundamental concepts of musical acoustics (30% of the final grade), and solve easy problems (70% of the final grade).
