Learning Outcomes
Cognitive: Understanding sustainability and sustainable use of natural resources. Understanding environmental problems and their relations with management. Applying ecological theory and knowledge in principles of sustainable ecosystem management. Bacic princimples of biodiveristy conservation. Development of criteria and presentation of various examples on methodologies and tools applied for biomonitoring, managing natural areas and for assessing the efficiency of protected areas. Affective: Raising awareness for environmental conservation issues, including sustainable living and sustainable use/management of natural resources. Skills: Recognition of environmental problems in the field, evaluation and proposing alternative sustainable management scenarios. Oganizing management plans. Debating the methods and tools used for biodiversity conservation.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Global human population increase, use/overexploitation of natural resources. Τhe concept and challenge of sustainability / sustainable development. Εcosystem Services. Principles of population and ecosystem management. Conservation management tools (biomonitoring, population management, protected areas, ecosystem restoration) Practicals Biodiversity indices, biomonitoring, assessing pressures and threats to biodiversity, management plans, debates on conservation biology issues (e.g. deextinction, ecotourism, culling) Field exercise Biomonitoring, assessing pressures and threats to biodiversity
