Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to: a)understand the concept of plant community as well as the plant species interactions and their relationships with abiotic factors, b)apply vegetation sampling and data analysis methods, and c)know the basic gradients of vegetation differentiation in Greece and the basic ecological factors shaping them.

Course Content (Syllabus)
1. LECTURES The plant community concept. Plant species interactions. Vegetation sampling and description. Nature and properties of vegetation data. Classification and ordination methods. Systematic and nomenclature of vegetation units. Synecology and syndynamics. Applied study of vegetation. Vegetation diversity in Greece and the Habitats’ Directive of European Union. 2. TUTORIAL-REPORT WRITING Guidelines for the report writing, the concept of habitat type, floristic composition-typical species, ecology, geography and conservation value-status of habitat types. 3. EXCURSIONS Two field excursions. 1st excursion: Study of floristic composition and ecology of azonal vegetation types (riparian, freshwater and coastal vegetation), 2nd excursion: Study of floristic composition and ecology of zonal vegetation types (vegetation differentiation along an altitudinal gradient).
