Upon successful completion of the course, students: - will be able to recognize the main directing trends and the most important creators from the First World War until about the 80's. - will have understood the historical development of the art of directing in relation to the wider socio-political developments, - will be able to recognize and demonstrate the influence of great creators on contemporary directing.

Yevgeny Vakhtangov (1883-1922), Nikolai Evreinov (1879-1953), Alexander Tairov (1885-1950): fantasy realism, commedia dell 'arte, stylization , 3. Max Reinhardt (1873-1943): eclecticism and the director's primacy, 4. Expressionism and epic theater: Ich-Drama, Stationen-Drama, Erwin Piscator (1893-1966), 5. Jacques Copeau (1879-1949) and Cartel: the primacy of the text and the passage to the actor, 6. Futurism. Surrealism. Antonin Artaud (1896-1948): absurd, unreal theatre and the Theatre of Cruelty, 7. Giorgio Strehler (1921-1997): commedia dell 'arte as political intervention and magic on stage, 8. Jerzy Grotowski (1933-1999 ): the Poor Theatre and the holy actor, 9. Peter Brook (1925-): the actor's imagination, Shakespeare's directing, 10. Eugenio Barba (1936-): theatre anthropology and actor pre-expression, 11.
