Learning Outcomes
After the successful completion of the course the students will: (1) Understand the basic principles of hydrometry both in field and in laboratory. (2) Understand the basic principles of hydraulic similarity and dimensional analysis. (3) Familiarize themselves with the execution of experiments in the laboratory and the presentation of results.
Course Content (Syllabus)
Introduction. Hydrometry and hydraulic works. Analysis of data, theory of errors, deterministic and stochastic variables. Hydrometeorological measurements. Measurement of velocity and discharge in pipes (Pitot tube, Venturi tube, nozzle, orifice). Measurement of stage and velocity in open channels. Methods of measurement of discharge: Velocity-area method, slope-area method, dilution method, stage-discharge curve. Weirs and flumes, critical depth meters. Ultrasonic method. Electromagnetic method. Theory of similarity. Dimensional analysis. The Buckingham theorem, applications. River and harbor models. Scale distortion. Loose boundary models.
