Learning Outcomes
After the successful completion of the course the students will: (1) Understand the basic principles of water hammer. (2) Understand the governing equations of the problem. (3) Familiarize themselves with the analytic and numerical solutions of the problem. (4) Understand the various surge-relief techniques.
Course Content (Syllabus)
Introduction. Unsteady flows in pipes. Rigid column theory. Hydraulic hammer (basic equations, boundary conditions). Analytical and graphical method of solution. Method of characteristics (theory and applications). Surge control devices. Oscillation of liquid mass. Wave motion in open-channel flows, basic equations. Dynamic waves (theory of characteristics, dam-break problem). Kinematic waves (motion of flood wave in a river basin, simplified mathematical models).
