Prerequisites
General Prerequisites
matrix algebra, Statics of determinate and indeterminate structures, strength of materials
Learning Outcomes
The students, after the successful completion of the course, will be able to determine the dynamic properties of single degree of freedom systems with and without damping. They will be able to compute the response due to external load of single-degree of freedom systems. Understanding the concept of the response and design spectrum (elastic and inelastic). Ability to determine the dynamic characteristics of multidegree of freedom systems and compute their response due to seismic excitation using the response spectrum method which is proposed by all modern seismic codes. Principles - assumptions and steps of application of the equivalent static method. The focus of the course is to provide the necessary knowledge to understand the methods of analysis proposed by modern seismic codes.
General Competences
  • Apply knowledge in practice
  • Make decisions
  • Work autonomously
Course Content (Syllabus)
The dynamic behavior of the structures, degrees of freedom, elastic and inertial discretization. Single degree of freedom systems: free vibration, eigenperiod and eigen-frequency, harmonic vibration. The role of damping. Seismic excitation-response. Seismic response spectra: primary spectra, normalized elastic spectra and design spectra. Ductility ratio and behavior factor. Seismic codes. Multi-degree of freedom systems: Eigenperiods and mode shapes, Rayleigh's quotient. Seismic analysis of structures: the response spectrum analysis method and the equivalent static method. Maximum response and unfavorable combinations of internal forces. The single-story building and the continuous model of high-rise buildings.
