Course Content (Syllabus)
The aim of the module is to teach fundamental, intermediate and advanced biology to scientists that are interested in applying biological principles to technological problems. Global challenges such as health care, environment, energy, food and better quality of life can be addressed. The module will include :
I. Biological hierarchy : types of biological structures, cell structure and dynamics, cells, tissues, organs, cell energy, motion, intercellular transport
II. Biological environment : aqueous environment, gaseous environment, cell nutrition, catabolites, influence of temperature/pressure, steady state / homeostasis.
III. Biological responses : population control, mechanical and chemical stimuli, self-control, adaptation, co-operation, antagonism, evolution, environmental pressure, communication, the biological clock, rhythmic behavior, death
