Learning Outcomes
The students a) will know the sources of ancient greek law and will be able to deliver a legal interpretation of them, b) they will study specific legal cases and will be able to discuss about the efficiency of an ancient system of administration of justice, product of the first democracy in history, with references to modern democracy and the modern law, c) will know the origines of legal maxims still valid nowadays, d) will enrich their overall legal and humanistic education.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course deals with legal problems, principles and institutions of ancient greek city- states. Several ancient greek sources will be approached, especially the speeches of attic orators. Famous processes and their political contexts will be studied in order to reconstruct the legal system of ancient Athens and to compare it not only to legal institutions of other ancient city –states but to legal issues of modern societies as well. The students will be asked to make an oral presentation of a chosen topic and to test their knowledge through a written exam at the end of the semester.
