Course Content (Syllabus)
The course constitutes an introduction to the study of the city and urban representation techniques in the framework of urban planning and urban design. The urban phenomenon is comprehended in socio-spatial terms, of physical form and social-environmental dynamics. Emphasis is put on the fact that the structure, the functions and the form of the city come about in multiplicity, as the result of social processes, historical circumstances, professional interventions and citizen initiatives, statutory mechanisms and institutions. The course is structured along the development of an exercise that focuses on the study, interpretation and analysis of urban forms, typologies and functions (streets, squares, urban blocks, land-uses, urban nature etc.) of a fragment of the real city, Thessaloniki. By means of several methods of mapping the exercise approaches the ways by which the city is planned and constituted, its physical and functional characteristics, as well as the genre of urban environment that results. Thematic lectures support the exercise development and aim at better comprehension of urban planning concepts and the variety of urban forms and tissues. Furthermore, students are asked to research a currently discussed issue of Thessaloniki's urban tissue and prepare a short report.
