Learning Outcomes
The objective of this theoretical elective course is to introduce to the undergraduate student the principles for construction of Immediate Dentures and Overdentures. The Immediate Dentures are constructed for partially edentulous patients whose remaining teeth cannot be maintained in the mouth, and who do not wish to remain edentulous for the time period required for the construction of the Complete Dentures. Overdentures are constructed in partially edentulous patients with a few remaining teeth in the mouth that can be maintained and used for the support and the retention of the Overdenture. Upon successful completion of the course the student will know the necessary differentiations for the construction of those special removable prosthetic appliances and will have an understanding to the situations that necessitate the construction of immediate dentures and overdentures
Course Content (Syllabus)
This course includes teaching of the following subjects: a. immediate dentures, b. tooth-supported overdentures, c. telescopic dentures, Upon completion of this course the student will know how to treatment plan an Immediate Denture as well as the clinical and laboratory procedures required to construct them. The differences in clinical and laboratory steps required for the construction of Immediate Dentures as compared with regular complete dentures are introduced and described.
As for the construction of the Overdentures the student will know how to diagnostic procedure of a patient to be treatment planned for overdentures. He will also know the necessary pre-prosthetic treatment required for abutment teeth for overdenture use.
