Learning Outcomes
Students who attend the course are expected to • learn about the Proto-Slavic homeland and the Slavic settlements in South, Central and Eastern Europe in the 6th and 7th centuries. • learn about the missionary work of Cyril and Methodius in Great Moravia and the spread of their legacy first in Bulgaria (also Ohrid area) and later all over the Slavic world as well as the medieval history of Bulgaria and Serbia • compare the social and cultural patterns of Byzantium with those of the medieval slavic states • to become sensitive to methodological and practical issues related to their field of study • to understand the byzantine and latin sources, conerning byzantine-slavic relations • practice their skills to present orally and in written their ideas and arguments

Course Content (Syllabus)
A general overview of medieval history of the Slavic people from the 6th to the 15th century. The course examines first of all the political and ecclesiastical history of Great Moravia, Bulgaria and Serbia, the evolution of their national identity and the creation of slavic states. Special attention will be paid to the important role of the Byzantine empire on their political and cultural life. In every unity will be also discussed special issues (for example the cyrillic script, the geogpraphical term Macedonia in the slavic sources, the state of tsar Samuel, the Hesychasmus and the Slavs etc.). 1st week The origins, the homeland, the migration to Europe and the ethnogenesis of the Slavic nations. 2nd week The foundation of Great Moravia, the first slavic state, in Central Europe and the cyrillo-methodian mission. Reading byzantine (Lives of St Clement of Ohrid and St Naum), latin (pope letters) and translated slavic sources (Lives of Sts Cyril and Methodius) we try to follow the course of the Thessalonian brothers Cyril and Methodius as well as their contribution to the Slavs. 3rd week The lecture is devoted to the contribution of Byzantium to the slavic culture in general, the creation of the first slavic alphabet and the written slavic language. 4th week The foundation of the First Bulgarian state. 5th week Tsar Symeon and the idea of the development of the imperial ideology, the literary and cultural Schools of Ohrid and Preslav. 6th week The state of tsar Samuel (976-1018) and the foundation of the Second Bulgarian State. 7th week The use of the geogpraphical term Macedonia and the ethnonym Macedonian in the byzantine, bulgarian and serbian sources. 8th week Hesychasm and its impact on the political and ecclesiastical life of the Southern and Eastern Slavs. The role of St Gregorios Sinaites and Gregorios Palamas on the development of the hesychast movement.The Bulgarian, Serbian and Russian Hesychasts. 9th week The foundation of the medieval Serbian state, its rulers (Stephan Nemanja, Stephan the First-Crowned, Milutin and Stephan Dechanski) and their relations with Byzantium. 10th week The Serbian tsar Stephan Dushan, the establishment of the southern Serbian state (its capital was Serres) and the Zakonik of Stefan Dushan. 11th week The political and ecclesiastical reasons of the establischment of the autocephalus Orthodox Serbian archbishopric (1219). 12th week The Slavic toponyms in Greece, especially in Peloponnese and Western Macedonia. Etymology and comparative study. 13th week Presentations of the students essays.
