Course Content (Syllabus)
The political movements of fascism and Nazism that came into power in various European countries after the end of War World I did not rely for their domination exclusively on brute force or on the threat of using it. They also formulated multifaceted ideological narratives in an effort to convince and co-opt various social classes, groups and individuals. Certain of their ideas and convictions affected deeply a group of Greek interwar intellectuals and men of letters. Our aim is to trace this influence, which varies from author to author, in their texts which are dealing with questions concerning the organization of the state, political thought and the study of ideas in general. We start with a brief introduction to fascism and Nazism. Next we proceed to the study of texts authored by Giannis Apostolakis, Nikos Kazantzakis, Demitrios Vezanis, Ioannis Sykoutris, Petros Orologas, Helias Kyriakopoulos and Michael Dendias. Finally, we examine the manners these ideas were disseminated to the Greek public through certain sympathetic to fascism and Nazism magazines such as Olimpo, To Neon Kratos and others.
