Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course students will be familiar with (a) the basic rules of substantive criminal law for dealing with drug trafficking and use by addicts in Greece and Cyprus, (b) the basic rules of substantive criminal law for dealing with abuse alcohol in Greece and Cyprus, (c) the basic rules of substantive criminal law for dealing with gambling addiction in Greece and Cyprus, and (d) the basic specific criminal procedure rules applicable to trafficking and use of drugs by addicted people.
Course Content (Syllabus)
The basic principles of specific drug legislation are presented, starting with the legislative reform that has taken place and the national policies and strategy that has been drawn up. Then follows a detailed presentation of the concept of drugs in specific legislation, the distinction between criminal treatment of drug trafficking and use with the citation of case law examples, while special reference is made to the issue of drug dependence and special treatment of addicted perpetrators.
Then follows an overview of other forms of addiction under criminal law, such as alcohol and gambling addiction, as well as problems related to computer addiction.
In the field of procedural law, issues related to the evidence of key aspects of repression (particularities of main interrogation, referral and procedure at the hearing) are raised.
