Learning Outcomes
► Upon the successful completion of the course students will be able to 1.Trace the timeline of major events of the Middle and Late Byzantine Empire 2.Identify the important stylistic and technical developments of the Middle and Late Byzantine Art 3.Get familiar with the famous monuments of the Middle and Late Byzantine Period in Thessaloniki 4.Ιdentify important artworks of Μiddle and Late Byzantine Period in Thessaloniki presenting relevant information on each work’s historical context and constitution 5.Conduct independent research and analysis

Course Content (Syllabus)
Thessaloniki as a center of byzantine culture, part II: The city of Thessaloniki in Macedonia, Greece, for several centuries the second-most important city of the Byzantine Empire, played an important role for Christianity during the Middle Ages and was decorated by impressive buildings. In 1988, fifteen monuments of Thessaloniki were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Especially: 7.Church of Panagia Chalkeon (11th century), 8.Church of St. Panteleimon (14th century), 9.Church of the Holy Apostles (14th century), 10.Church of St. Nicholas Orphanos (14th century), 11.Church of St. Catherine (13th century), 12. Church of Christ Saviour (14th century)/13.Blatades Monastery (14th century)/,14.Church of Prophet Elijah (14th century)/15.Byzantine Bath (14th century)

Student Assessment
Students must attend regularly (13 classes/semester), participate actively in class, read all weekly assignments, and study all images in class powerpoints. Students are graded 80% depending on the final in class examination and 20% on participation in the class.
