Learning Outcomes
Students are expected to: Understand the meaning of architecture and the built environment in general, as well as the meaning of space and its perception in different eras Expand their humanitarian education Understand and appreciate the monuments of the past, distant and most recent, and become aware of architectural heritage issues Understand the relationship between architecture and the visual and applied arts Practice observing and interpreting the bulit environment and improve their expressive skills in their artistic field Gain didactic and pedagogical competence Get to acknowledge and learn the architectural achievements of Byzantium and Europe in the Middle Ages

Course Content (Syllabus)
1. Early Christian architecture. 2. Justinian architecture. The Hagia Sophia. 3. Architecture in Byzantium during the Middle-Byzantine era. 4. Architecture in Byzantium during the Later-Byzantine era. 5. The Early –Christian monuments of Thessaloniki. Study on the site. 6. The Byzantine monuments of Thessaloniki. Study on the site. 7. The Byzantine architecture and its impact outside Byzantium. (Russia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Sicily, France, Venice). 8. Islamic architecture. Ottoman architecture. 9. Carolingian Renaissance. Romanesque architecture. The pilgrimages. 10. Gothic architecture. The birth of gothic architecture in France. The meaning of Gothic. High Gothic architecture. The Rayonnant Style. The Flamboyant Style. 11. Gothic in England. Early Gothic architecture, the Decorated Style, the Perpendicular Style. 12. Gothic architecture in Germany, Italy, Spain and Portugal. 13. Architecture in Greece during the Latin and Turkish occupation. Traditional architecture. The post-Byzantine, Ottoman and traditional monuments of Thessaloniki.
