Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the module the students are expected to: * conceive the multiplicity and complexity of the artistic expressions of postwar art * understand the ways art of that period and the "neo-avant-garde" are differentiated in relation to the historical avant-garde movements of the first half of the 20th c. * conceive the ways that contemporary art is composed through the intersections between art practices, theoretical discourse and curatorial policies * develop their critical capacity concerning the ways art is related to the postwar social, political, economic and institutional framework * understand the ways that their artistic practices relate with the postwar developments in the field of visual arts

Course Content (Syllabus)
This module focuses on the visual arts of the period 1940-1970, with emphasis on Europe and the USA; in particular it is concerned with the movements of the neo-avant-garde, the new trends of abstract and realist art, conceptual and minimalist art, pop art, the artistic expressions of institutional critique and new art forms such as environments, installations, performance, happenings, and video art. The main aims of the module are the following: * analyzing the multiplicity and complexity of the artistic expressions of that period concerning abstract and realist art trends, mass culture, activism, the new perceptions of the body and technology * highlighting the relationship between artistic practices, theoretical discourse and the new institutional policies * analyzing curatorship -exhibitions, curatorial practices and discourses- as the main field for the systematization, signification and promotion of art * contributing to the development of the cognitive fundament that would facilitate the alignments between theoretical and artistic practices and discourses

Description
Teaching involves use of computers and systems of projection and sound for power point presentations, video projections and sound reproductions, internet, and the e-learning platform for uploading all relevant educational material (presentations, bibliography, etc.). Communication with the students takes place via email and the e-learning platform.

Description
The evaluation of the students involves: * presence and participation in the lectures (20%) * presence and participation in the relevant scheduled educational activities (visits to museums, conferences, events, etc.) (15%) * assignments, presentations, exercises, etc. (15%) * written or oral exams (50%)
