Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course students will have understood and assimilated the concept of mimesis of classical models in Byzantine poetry. They will be able to discuss the tradition and innovation in Byzantine literature. Finally, they will be able to present a linguistic and literary analysis of selected, representative Byzantine texts.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Imitation of classical models in Byzantine poetry. Students will study poems of Gregory of Nazianzus, Synesius of Cyrene, Sophronius of Jerusalem, Theodore Prodromus and Ioannes Katrares.
