The linguistic, social and psychological factors pertaining to the second language learning process are examined; the role of the home language and the emphasis put in its maintenance in a language learning program (subtractive and additive bilingualism) are studied; differences and similarities between the processes of first and second language acquisition are identified; traditional and contemporary approaches to second language teaching are presented and critically assessed; good practice and practical strategies as well as assessment routines are presented, often co-constructed in class, so that future teachers are informed and trained to support and facilitate their students’ second language learning development.
