Learning Outcomes
Cellular adaptations to exercise. Introduce the basic cellular functions at rest and during exercise and the adaptations to the cells' function in response to different modes of training. The student will study how the adaptations on cell structure and function interact with the cardiovascular functions. In addition, the cellular functions that lead to hypertrophy and atrophy, as well as novel scientific findings on the field of cellular exercise physiology will be presented to the student. At the end of the course, the student will be able to explain how exercise can result in the adaptations in the cell's function in athletes, in individuals from the general population and in individuals with chronic diseases.
General Competences
  • Retrieve, analyse and synthesise data and information, with the use of necessary technologies
  • Adapt to new situations
  • Make decisions
  • Work autonomously
  • Work in teams
  • Work in an international context
  • Work in an interdisciplinary team
  • Generate new research ideas
  • Design and manage projects
  • Be critical and self-critical
  • Advance free, creative and causative thinking

Student Assessment
Written final exam (via quiz in the e-learning platform). The quiz will be consisted of multiple choice questions, short answer questions, and matching (final quiz: 100% of the grade). During the semester, the students will take 20 quizzes (approximately one at the end of each lecture). These quizzes will be for self evaluation and verification of the understanding of the student in each lecture. The answers to the quiz and difficulties will be presented at the beginning of the following lecture. In addition, the students will have to turn in a study question guide at the end of the semester.
Student Assessment methods
  • Written Exam with Multiple Choice Questions (Formative, Summative)
  • Written Exam with Short Answer Questions (Formative, Summative)
  • Oral Exams (Formative)
  • Written Exam with Problem Solving (Formative)
