Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to: • realize the significance and usefulness of the international protection of human rights and freedoms on the international level, • comprehend the function and applications of international law in the field of the individual’s rights and freedoms, • approach effectively the issue of the protection of human rights and freedoms, transcending the traditional prerogative of domestic legal order, • elaborate critically on the current challenges posed to the fundamental rights and freedoms by state policies and • form a human-centric consciousness within the framework of international law.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course focuses on the international protection of human rights. It provides for an introduction of the general theory of human rights and examines the dialectics between public international law and human rights, taking the United Nations and particularly the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as a starting point. The course’s main focus is the institutional and conventional framework for the protection of human rights in the United Nations system, and the contribution of the international judicial organs and quasi-judicial organs on the international and regional level. Finally, fundamental rights and freedoms, as well as rules and institutions are thoroughly analyzed, in order to provide for a comprehensive knowledge on the field of international protection of human rights.

Description
Students are welcome to use Moodle and digital data bases, such as Westlaw and Jstor, and retrieve information from the websites of the United Nations and the regional courts for human rights. Also, they may contact the teaching staff via e-mail.
