Prerequisites
General Prerequisites
The course has no formal prerequisites. In order for the participants to be able to more easily understand the structure of many complex problems, it is recommended to attend the previous courses of Criminal Law - General Part.
Learning Outcomes
The fundamental concepts of criminology, the theoretical interpretations of criminal behavior and the methods of empirical approach to the criminal phenomenon are developed. The extent, structure and course of certain individual categories of crimes, the total crime as well as the criminality of various groups of the population in Greece and internationally are also examined. Finally, the strategic and tactical social measures and state sanctions aimed at controlling crime are analyzed.

Course Content (Syllabus)
This course aims to offer an analysis of the key criminological ideas:the evolution of crime as a social phenomenon and divergent theoretical interpretations of criminal behaviour. Furthermore, it is provided a discussion on the extent, structure and development of criminality in general, as well as, of specific categories of crimes-in Greece and Internationally-in particular.Finally, it is offered an overview of both informal and formal measures of penal control.

Student Assessment
Description
The evaluation of the students is based on the examination process (written and oral) at the end of the semester as well as (auxiliary-supporting) on their (voluntary) participation in the writing of theses. To ensure transparency in the evaluation of their performance, a predefined detailed score is used for each individual problem that is set to be solved in the exams. To enhance the above transparency, students are encouraged to come after the exams either in group or individual meetings with the teacher in order to see their writing and receive detailed explanations of both the way they had to answer and the way rated.
