Learning Outcomes
The students of the course are expected to
- develop their personal research practices, on subjects that are not approached through the mandatory courses of History of Architecture offered in the first stagres of their studies
- approach and critically analyze the architectural creation within the wider political, social and cultural context of each period
- enrich their theoretical background and their methodological tools in the field of Documentation and Restoration of monuments
- gain an insight of the contribution of History of Architecture in providing to young architects spiritual and aesthetic values, critical approach to historical memory and a comprehensive humanistic education
Course Content (Syllabus)
The course focuses on certain aspects of religious, civil and military architecture of the wider Greek area, from Ancient Times to 19th century AD, which will be presented by the teaching staff and invited lecturers. Some of the subjects of the class, for the spring semester of 2018-19, are:
- Ancient and Medieval military architecture, Renaissance and modern fortifications
- The Eptapyrgion Fortress, Thessaloniki
- The architecture of Macedonian Tombs
- Selected issues on Byzantine church architecture
- Adrianopolis, the evolution of an Ottoman capital
- Water supply in ancient an byzantine cities: the case of Thessaloniki
etc.
