Course Content (Syllabus)
The course examines the Greek-Italian relations and exchanges (political, ideological, social, cultural, military), but also the manifestations of solidarity during the period of revolutions and nationalisms and, consequently, the revival of the two people. The starting point of the study is the European Enlightenment movement, as well as the French Revolution, which revealed new social forces and led to reforms fundamental to the evolution of European societies. In addition to individual freedoms and civil rights, the right of nations for political emancipation and self-determination, the promotion of the modern bureaucratic national-bourgeois state, etc., ideologies and movements emerged in France, such as liberalism, nationalism and social radicalism, which would affect the whole of Europe and signal the passage to modernity. Exporting the Revolution gained new momentum with Napoleon’s attempt to unify Europe administratively, socially and politically on the basis of French revolutionary models and institutions. Greek and Italian revival and unification processes (19th century) are placed in this historical context. The exchanges between the two sides were many and varied, and are clearly reflected in a series of historical phenomena and processes that are thoroughly examined, such as the Greek Diaspora and the pre-revolutionary fermentations in the Italian peninsula, the Italian component of the philhellenic movement and the participation of Italian volunteer fighters in the Greek struggle for independence, the reception of Risorgimento’s Italian political exiles, but also of Italian economic migrants during the same period in independent Greece (1830 onwards) and in the Ionian Islands under British protection (1815-1864) [in the past under Venetian rule], the missions of Italian Garibaldini volunteers to Greece in order to strengthen the Greek irredentism, the cultural interactions, etc.

Student Assessment
Description
The course is taught mostly in seminar form, and is therefore based on the active participation of the students. The instructor makes only short introductory presentations, and then follows an interactive hands-on practical analysis of both primary historical sources and historiographical works relating to various aspects of the Greek-Italian relations and exchanges that take place during the period under examination. Beyond the class groupwork, participating students (who are required to attend at least 11 of the total of 13 meetings) will be called to demonstrate the skills and know-ledge they acquired as follows: each student will undertake to present, analyze and interpret a specific topic on the basis of primary and secondary sources. For those students who will be unable to attend the course’s 13 class meetings, there will be a final written examination.
Student Assessment methods
  • Written Exam with Multiple Choice Questions (Formative, Summative)
  • Written Exam with Extended Answer Questions (Formative, Summative)
  • Written Assignment (Formative, Summative)
  • Performance / Staging (Formative, Summative)
