Learning Outcomes
After the successful completion of the course the students will be able to: (a) make use of their knowledge in theology in the discussion of current issues and theories related to the existence of good and evil in the world. (b) engage themselves in a dialogue with social sciences, history of the art, modern literature regarding the analysis and the artistic expression of the good and the evil.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course is an interdisciplinary approach to Angelology and Demonology through their biblical background, Orthodox theological and liturgical tradition, literature and Christian Art in Byzantium and the West. COURSE SYLLABUS 1. Introduction to Angelology and Demonology - Approach to Orthodox teaching on spirits (good and evil) - General view of the existence of evil in the world from the standpoint of Orthodox Theology and art. 2. Angelology and Demonology in the Old Testament and Judaism. 3. Angelology and Demonology in the New Testament and the Christian Apocryphal Literature. 4. The Angels in the Ecclesiastical Literature and the Liturgical Texts. - Angels in the teaching of Fathers and Ecclesiastical Writers. 5. The theological conditions of the depiction of Angels in Christian art. 6. The framing of the iconography of Angels in Byzantine and Western Christian art. 7. The Iconographic Circle of Miracles-Appearances of Angels and Archangels in Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Art. 8. Angels as celestial deacons and as members of the heavenly court in written sources and art. 9. The Iconography of Demons in Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Art. 10. The Second Coming as the time of the end. - Byzantine and post-Byzantine representations of the Future Crisis. 11. The iconography of Angels and Demons in the Christian art of the West. 12. Angels and Demons in literature, theater, and cinema. 13. Course conclusions - Presentation of students’ projects/thesis.
