Learning Outcomes
After completing the course, the students will be able to understand the basic concepts of 1) pharmacokinetics - to the extent that they are able to perform simple pharmacokinetic calculations (e.g., loading dose, maintenance dose) and can estimate the probability of drug-drug interactions, 2) pharmacodynamics, so that they understand the concept of agonism and antagonism, as well as the relation between mechanism of action, efficacy, toxicity, clinical utility, indications, contra-indications, adverse reactions, and pharmacodynamic drug-drug interactions, and 3) the basic properties (pharmacokinetics, mechanism of action, indications, adverse effects, contraindications) of drugs acting on the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system, so that they can understand better their clinical utility in future courses and administer them safely in clinical praxis. They will be able to appreciate the significance of pharmacological modulation of chemical mediators in preparation for the studying of Systemic Pharmacology in future semesters. They will have become familiar with the effects of age, comorbidity, polypharmacy, and interindividual variability on drug action.
