Course Content (Syllabus)
This course deals with a range of questions that concern the metaphysics and epistemology of mental states and processes. We shall examine some established theories in the area of the philosophy of mind, such as behaviorism, functionalism, anomalous monism and reductive physicalism. Then we examine how these theories deal with issue such as the following ones. What are the distinctive marks of the mental? What is the relation between mind and brain? What is the nature of mental causation? We then examine the implications of these questions regarding well-worn questions regarding personal identity and the nature of the self. These inquiries naturally lead to the topic of self-knowledge, and we examine the contemporary debate between rationalist and empiricist accounts of one's knowledge of one's own mental states.
