Learning Outcomes
Focuses on the study of cells, tissues and embryology of the human body with emphasis on those tissues that compose the head, neck and oral cavity. Topics include: cellular structure and organelles, histology of epithelium, histology of muscle tissue, histology of nerve tissue, histology of connective tissue, embryological development of the head and neck. Furthermore to define and discuss the functions of the different types of epithelium lining the oral cavity in respect to lining mucosa, masticatory mucosa, specialized mucosa and the function and development of the salivary glands and their derivation from epithelial tissue.
Course Content (Syllabus)
The content of this course includes introduction to pathology of the oral and maxillofacial region, diagnostic methodology, histopathological lesions, developmental malformations, syndromes of the head and neck, neoplasms of the oral and maxillofacial region, inflammatory hyperplasias, precancerous lesions and conditions, carcinogenesis, odontogenic tumors and cysts of the soft tissues. The educational methods used for this course are the seminars. Criteria of evaluation are the regular attendance of the seminars and success in the exams at the end of the 7th semester.
The content of this course elements of oral microbiology, infections, diseases of salivary glands, physical and chemical damages, diseases of immune etiology, metabolic diseases, blood diseases, oral and maxillofacial manifestations of systemic diseases, skin diseases, diseases of the nervous and muscular system, endocrine diseases, diseases of the connective tissue.The educational methods used for this course are the seminars. Criteria of evaluation are the regular attendance of the seminars and success in the exams at the end of the 8th semester.
