Learning Outcomes
Understanding the fundamentals of the structure of the Earth's interior, e.g. seismic velocity structure, velocity discontinuities, petrological properties in the earth, temperature and pressure distribution within the Earth.
Understanding deformation and kinematics (geodynamics) of the lithosphere and their causes.
Understanding seismic wave propagation within the Earth and the use of seismic waves in determining the Earth's structure.
Course Content (Syllabus)
Structure of the Crust and Upper Mantle (distribution of the velocities and attenuation of seismic waves, gravity distribution, variation of elastic parameters, density and pressure. Deformation and kinematics of the lithosphere (seismological and other geophysical methods).
