Learning Outcomes
They will be able to analyze thermal processes in power generation. They will be able to analyze processes for the energy utilization of biomass. They will be able to select refrigeration mixtures and units for industrial refrigeration applications.

Course Content (Syllabus)
(1) Thermal processes in power generation: Steam and gas cycles, combined cycles, steam generation plants, exergy analysis, steam and warm water for industrial use, co-generation of heat and electricity, heat recovery systems, drying, heat recovery in industry. (2) Energy utilization of biomass: Types of biomass and dynamic characteristics, conversion technologies. Combustion - stages, pollutant emissions, technologies, applications and challenges, environmental regulations. Pyrolysis – types of processes, composition of organic matter, decomposition of solid biomass and kinetics of decomposition, pyrolysis products, technologies and applications. Gasification – gasification process technologies and stages, applications for exploitation of biogas produced in ICEs, gas turbines and fuel cells. Gas upgrading processes, Fischer-Tropsch. Gasification in stationary and bubbling fluidized beds, calculation. Composition of gasification products, chemical equilibrium, calculation of composition and energy content. Other thermal processes. First, second and third generation biofuels. Processes for the production of biofuels and properties, biodiesel, bioethanol, biomethane and hydrogen. (3) Industrial refrigeration: Refrigerant mixtures, cyclic processes, compressor refrigeration units, absorption refrigeration systems, piping, machines, equipment, refrigeration spaces, refrigeration power. Industrial refrigeration applications, cooling towers, refrigerator cooling agents and their integrated evaluation, cryogenic and other specific (i.e. medical) applications of refrigeration.
