Learning Outcomes
After the succesful completion of the course, the students are expected to: • Identify and evaluate the plausible rock mass failure mechanisms • estimate and calculate the safety factor on large scale projects • know the principles on how to draft a geotechnical study • use up to date numerical analysis software to simulate the discontinuum medium
General Competences
  • Retrieve, analyse and synthesise data and information, with the use of necessary technologies
  • Make decisions
  • Work autonomously
  • Work in teams
  • Work in an interdisciplinary team
  • Design and manage projects
  • Respect natural environment
Course Content (Syllabus)
Empirical, computing and observational approach of designing in rock mechanics related issues. Stereo-geographical mapping of discontinuities. Investigation of plausible failure mechanisms. Safety factor. Methodology of drafting geotechnical studies – composition of geotechnical underground model - analytical methods – monitoring of a project. Current computing Rock Mechanics. Simulation of rock mass either as equivalent continuum medium or as a discontinuum medium. Τwo- dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) numerical analyses using up to date software. Examples of existing large scale projects
