Learning Outcomes
(a) to acquaint students with Homeric poetry against the background of archaic poetry and the poetry composed in the Near East.
(b) to familiarize students with the central issues examined by Homeric Scholarship.
(c) to enable students to read the Homeric epics from the original and to practice on issues of linguistic analysis and interpretive approach.

Course Content (Syllabus)
This course offers and introduction to Homer through the study of specific books from the Iliad and the Odyssey in the original language. The introduction deals with important issues of Homeric scholarship, such as the composition of the epics, the Homeric question, the historicity of the epics, orality, structure etc. Emphasis is also placed on questions of Homeric language as well as on the interpretation of the epics according the various approaches of modern Homeric research.
a) to familiarize the students with homeric poetry in the archaic age and its relation to the poetry of the Near East
b)to familiarize the students with the basic questions of homeric scholarship
c) to study the Homeric epics in their original language and exercise themselves in matters of dialect, language and philological interpretation
