Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able: 1. To understand key concepts of chemical analysis. 2. To cope with instrumental recordings of biomolecules analysis and compose reports 3. To acquire the appropriate theoretical background in order to understand and also prepare a protocol with the basic stages of biomolecular analysis 4. To acquire the appropriate lab. background in order to apply simple protocols for biomolecule analysis

Course Content (Syllabus)
• Introduction to Chemical Analysis, Methods of Chemical Analysis • Units of mass (or weight) and volume. Safety Principles in the Lab • Statistics on Chemical Analysis • Sampling-sample storage-analytical sample • Solution preparation and solution properties • Extraction as a separating technique • Methods of chemical analysis • Ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry (UV-Vis) • Spectrophotometric estimation of the total antioxidant capacity of plant extracts • Chromatography as a separation technique • Chromatographic methods (HPLC, GC, GC-MS, LC-MS) • Enzyme analysis • Protein Analysis - Extraction, fractionation and quantification

Student Assessment
Description
1. 60% of the final grade comes from the performance in the laboratory exercises: a) the laboratory report after each exercise and b) the presence and the active participation in the lab class are taken into account . 2. 40% of of the final grade comes from the preparation/presentation of the final project.
